The internet is full of places where you can commission artwork.
Unfortunately, it’s also full of scams, AI-generated slop, stolen portfolios, disappearing freelancers, and marketplaces that seem determined to make life harder for both artists and clients.
That’s one of the reasons I’ve continued recommending VGen for anime art, VTuber models, Live2D rigging, and creative commissions. A platform made for REAL artist ONLY!
As the little alien who runs iiiSekai Studios and works professionally in the VTuber industry, I’ve spent a lot of time watching how commission platforms evolve over the past 10 years. VGen is easily my favorite. Throughout 2025 and now into 2026, VGen has introduced several major updates that make it one of the safest and most creator-friendly places on the internet.
So let’s talk about what’s new.
For anyone completely new to the world of commissions:
VGen is an online marketplace designed specifically for creative services.
Unlike generic freelance websites like Fiverr, Upwork, and Freelancer.com, VGen focuses heavily on artists, VTubers, riggers, musicians, writers, designers, editors, and other creative professionals that are all 100% Human. One of the most important updates arriving in 2026 is VGen’s expanded buyer protection system.
Historically, one of the biggest fears clients had when commissioning online was simple:

While most artists are fantastic people, every platform eventually attracts a few bad actors.
To address this, VGen introduced several major protections.

Another major update involves payment handling.

As someone who has commissioned artists myself and also worked as an artist professionally, this is probably one of the healthiest compromises I’ve seen.
Clients feel safer.
Artists who communicate and deliver work are unaffected.
Everyone wins.
VGen’s verification system has expanded considerably.

As someone obsessed with worldbuilding and character design, I think this is one of the smartest features VGen has introduced.

While VGen has become one of the best platforms for artists and clients alike, there are still a few improvements I’d personally love to see in future updates.
The biggest one for me is cleaning up the tagging system.
As an artist who regularly posts portfolio updates and commission listings, I’ve noticed that tags can sometimes become a bit chaotic. You’ll occasionally see things like:

Not only does this make browsing feel messy, but it also creates SEO issues and makes it harder for clients to find exactly what they’re looking for. A more standardized tagging system, suggested tags, or tag moderation could go a long way toward improving search quality for everyone.
A cleaner tagging structure would help artists get discovered more accurately and help clients spend less time digging through duplicate categories. And if you want to add a new tag to the system it should need to be verified before becoming public.
Another feature I’d love to see is expanded search filtering.

As someone who maintains a 100% five-star rating, I think it would be wonderful if clients had more ways to identify artists with proven track records.
VGen already does a fantastic job encouraging quality service, and adding more reputation-based search options could further reward artists who consistently deliver excellent work.
One thing I completely understand is why VGen doesn’t allow users to sort artists strictly from lowest price to highest price.
Creative work isn’t a commodity it’s a luxury.
Commissioning an artist isn’t the same as shopping for batteries on Amazon. Art is personal, highly skilled, and often reflects years of experience and training.
That said, I do think a budget slider would be incredibly useful.
Instead of encouraging people to hunt for the cheapest artist available, clients could simply enter their budget range and discover creators who fit comfortably within their price point.

This would make searching much more efficient for both clients and artists without turning creative work into a race to the bottom.
None of these are deal-breakers. VGen is already one of the strongest commission platforms available today, especially for VTubers, anime artists, and mangaka.
But as the platform continues to grow, improving discoverability may become just as important as improving safety and workflow tools.
A cleaner tag system, stronger search filters, and smarter budget tools would make it even easier for great artists and ideal clients to find each other.
And that’s ultimately what every commission platform should strive for.
The internet is changing quickly.
AI is flooding creative spaces.
Trust is becoming harder to find.
And commission horror stories still happen every day.
That’s why I continue recommending VGen comms to creators, VTubers, and anime fans looking for professional work. For many indie creators, myself included, it has become a one-stop shop for building an entire virtual identity.
